Grey Lily No More

June 23, 2009

While I was in Arizona this weekend, torrential rains hit Chicago. Our flight out was the last one they didn’t cancel (and wonderfully turbulent, of course) as the rain and hail were so bad. So when I got back and went to the barn the outdoor arena and round pen were absolutely underwater. Luckily Lily is now in the big pasture with the main herd (my trainer’s horses and a few easy-going boarded horses) which has good drainage. She has already made great friends with Benny, a little Halflinger, who dotes on her like a cute 13 hand suitor. She was nice and muddy when I went out to get her and it was hot today – about 100 degrees and horribly humid – so I hosed her off for the first time since moving her home. She was wonderful as always, and loved drinking from the hose and wiggling her lips all over the place. Of course, the second I let her back into the pasture she rolled, but at least she had a nice cool bath (and so did I after riding in that weather.)

The cow pony in Lily came out today in a wonderful way – she is now pastured with the gelding I sometimes ride in lessons, and when he decided that he would rather eat and trot away from me than come in she was following at my heels. I made him run a little since he was being stubborn and I knew I couldn’t possibly follow him around the whole huge pasture, and as he was cantering away Lily herded him right into the smaller paddock for me.

I’ll probably have another update tomorrow as well. I had planned on working with Lily more today but just couldn’t stand the heat after having ridden for an hour already, so I gave her (and myself) a break today. I’ll try to get some pictures of her with her new buddies soon!

LOL about that poor gelding(her “cow”). She does have a natural talent for it doesn’t she;) Maybe you will have to take some cow working classes 😮

Hahahaha…well, if you ever decide that eventing isn’t your thing, at least you know Lily has some “fallback” skills. And, hey, you won’t even need to get a Border Collie to herd your horses – just use Lily!

I don’t blame you for not working in this heat! I am just about dying. And when we had the rain, I had gone out to ride for the first time in forever, and lucky me got to cut my ride short and help with chores in the monsoon, risking my life in knee deep water while it was lightning just to get the horses inside. LOL! It takes some convincing to say that I love my job at the barn sometimes…
